Battle the elements in style with these five practical outfits, fit for rain or shine

When the mercury plummets, sartorial standards often follow suit. But as this cold-weather style guide proves, function and fashion need not be mutually exclusive. It is possible to stay warm and still look smart, and the canny dresser who can maintain his appearance without compromising on practicality will stand out all the more.

As Snapchat’s DJ Khaled might say, the key to success in the battle against the elements is to top and tail your look with the right outerwear and footwear. Here are our style cures for the common cold-weather-dressing problem.

We all know those people who tramp to and from the office in Wellington boots when it’s slushy underfoot. Practical, of course. Stylish? Not so much. So we asked expert cobbler Ms Maud O’Keeffe to produce some office-appropriate Goodyear-welted shoes made from waterproof leather with rubber soles. Et voila! As for the coat, wearing a full-length down-filled parka with tailoring is very Milanese.

Embrace the flattering ease of a turtleneck,  the building block of luxe layering.

What is it about a turtleneck that makes it so gratifying to wear? I love the automatic face-framing effect!  If you think is too tricky to look chic and stay warm, look at one of the season’s coziest trends: the turtleneck sweater. These high-collar sweaters will hug your neck  when its colder outside—making them the ultimate cold-weather fashion staple as the temperatures drop. These sweaters are especially ideal for days when you know you’ll be spending a lot of time outside ( specially in the breezy morning commute).

I mean, come cool is this white turtleneck sweater? If  I have to take several meetings during the day that involve moving around London or if I have dinner plans without having time to really get ready,  I like to wear easy and versatile pieces that I can easily swap out or layer up. Turtlenecks are definitely my go to top.

I love turtlenecks in the cold months, not only are they warm, but they go with pretty much anything. I wear them alone, or layer it under a jacket with jeans, leather leggings, sneakers or with heels if have to dress a bit fancier. They’re so versatile!

I know turtleneck tops usually have a bit of a nerdy reputation, but they can look all sorts of fashionable when styled right. Black, white, and neutral turtlenecks are your best bet for creating a range of versatile looks.  Stick to turtlenecks made out of cashmere and with a heavy knit gauge. The cashmere will feel butter soft against your skin (wool is usually itchy). Heres a fact: Cashmere is 8x warmer that wool and 30% lighter, so invest in buying 2 or 3 really good quality sweaters that will keep you feeling absolutely fabulous and keep you warm.

All those sweaters you pick up at  Zara and H&M are made out of  Nylon, polyester, viscose and vinyl, materials that will make you sweaty, smelly and shiny. If you own only one sweater, make sure it’s cashmere.

Luckily, a simple fitted turtleneck looks oh so styling when teamed with a chic pair of leather leggings. Finish #your look off with some ladylike pumps, a great pair of shades and a cute handbag and you’ve got yourself an extremely on-trend outfit.

For leather leggings my “Go-to” brand is Etoile London, they have the softest leather, killer fit ( better than Helmut Lang) and they’re half the price!

A confident women always favors simplicity, so the secret is not to try too hard.

My personal style is about being natural but chic. While I am “au courant” with whats going on in the fashion world, I take a “laissez-faire” approach to adhering to trends. I am more based around the idea of an elevated everyday wardrobe. – This season it’s comfy cashmere sweaters, over the knee boots, chic fur coats and leather jackets – each impeccably made without feeling too precious. My favorite coat & leather pants brand Etoile London exemplify this ethos.

Their designs might showcase colorful furs or bold hardware, but thanks to their comfortable materials and relaxed cuts, they’re allways underpinned with a sense of effortlessness. You guys…how cool is this Etoile London fox fur vest?

I fell in love with this particular fox fur vest because its its versatility, as it gets colder you layer it up with a leather jacket and it simply looks stunning! – zipped up or opened up this vest is a stunner.

I like to wear it with a simple Splendid white t-shirt and distressed Frame jeans for a casual very simple style, making the fox fur vest the star of the outfit.

If you don’t have a pair of over the knee boots in your wardrobe already, Im not sure how you’re going to make it through the season.

They’re sleek, sharp and sexy (I love the pointed toe) –and when it comes in black, burgundy, navy blue and gray well… you’ll pretty much wear it all the time. And you definitely can!  Gone are winter days where your bottoms will simply consist of jeans and tights. With these thigh high boots, those favourite skirts, dresses and trendy culottes will definitely be mainstays of your wardrobe. Wear your black thigh high boots with your sweater and jeans combo, a mini skirt, a pencil or A-line skirt –your winter wardrobe instantly expands with these awesome shoes.

These rich burgundy pair is from  British Shoe Designer- Adela King. Her boots are that classic thigh high boot design with a close fit for every leg type. And don’t worry about the suede slouching. The boot comes with a special lining that keeps it snug and looking sleek.

I have skinny legs and its always such a struggle to find boots that don’t look baggy, or that slouch.. slouchy boots make you look cheap (even if you’re wearing expensive boots).   The incredible thing about these boots  is that they do not slouch at all, they have the same invisible border as  stockings do ( that gel like material around the leg that prevents them from slipping down).  I really really love the pointed toe, it  makes my legs look so much longer.  These boots are handmade in Italy and at £740 are  half the price of their designer counterparts. Score!!!
